The 2026 Volvo XC40 is available in four trim levels: Core, Plus, Ultra, and Black Edition Ultra. Each one is built on the same B5 AWD mild hybrid powertrain — a 2.0 L 4-cylinder producing 247 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque — but the equipment and interior character change meaningfully as you move up the range. Knowing what each trim includes helps narrow the decision down to the configuration that fits how you actually plan to use the vehicle.
This guide works through every trim in order, from Core to Black Edition Ultra, covering exactly what each level adds and why those additions matter.
The Core is the starting point for the XC40 mild hybrid lineup, and it arrives with a comprehensive set of standard equipment. Wireless phone charging, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, Bluetooth connectivity, and the Volvo Cars app are all standard. A 9-inch centre display and 12.3-inch driver display come fitted across all four trims. The High Performance audio system handles sound in the Core trim.
Safety equipment at Core includes whiplash injury protection, inflatable curtains, side impact protection, ISOFIX rear mounting points, a knee airbag, and automatic door locking. Active driver support features — Lane Keeping Aid, Road Sign Information, adaptive cruise control, and rain sensor — are also standard. A panoramic roof is available as an option at Core.
The Core's exterior comes in Cloud Blue, Crystal White, Onyx Black, Denim Blue, and Vapour Grey, with Grey Melange City Block Textile in Charcoal or Charcoal Leather interiors. Wheels are 18-inch 5-double spoke black diamond cut or 19-inch 5-Y spoke matte graphite diamond cut.
Moving to Plus adds a set of upgrades that change both the look and feel of the XC40 in day-to-day driving. Harman Kardon Premium Sound becomes optional at this level (standard on Ultra). Google built-in services — Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play Store — are confirmed standard at Plus. Interior illumination steps up to high level. The 360° camera, missing from Core, becomes standard. HomeLink is also added.
Inside, Plus gains a power passenger seat (replacing the manually adjustable Core unit), manual cushion extensions for driver and passenger, and the tailored sport steering wheel in Charcoal replaces the standard unit. The Crystal gear shift by Orrefors is an option at Plus. Colour choices expand to include Sand Dune, Aurora Silver, and Forest Lake, with Charcoal Connect Suede textile/Microtech, Charcoal Leather, or Blond Leather interior options.
The Ultra delivers the fully equipped XC40 without the Black Edition aesthetic treatment. Pilot Assist — which combines adaptive cruise with lane-centring — becomes standard at Ultra; it is unavailable at both Core and Plus. The air purifier with remote cabin pre-cleaning is standard at Ultra, allowing the driver to clear the cabin air before entry via the Volvo Cars app. Heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, and power child safety lock all become standard here.
On the audio side, Harman Kardon Premium Sound is now standard, as is the air-ventilated subwoofer. Pixel Technology Headlights with headlight cleaning are standard. Wheels step up to 20-inch 5-double spoke black diamond cut. The Crystal gear shift by Orrefors is available as an option at Ultra.

The Black Edition Ultra takes the Ultra's complete feature set and applies a dedicated visual package. The exterior gets 20-inch 5-spoke Black Edition wheels, colour-coordinated door mirror covers (the other trims use high-gloss black), and body-coloured roof rails. The Black Edition Ultra uses Crystal White, Onyx Black, Denim Blue, or Vapour Grey on the outside with Charcoal Connect Suede textile/Microtech as the standard interior. All-season tyres are standard.
All the safety, driver support, climate, and technology features of the Ultra carry over unchanged. The Black Edition Ultra's trim-level distinction is entirely visual — it doesn't remove features or change powertrain specifications. The B5 AWD mild hybrid remains: 247 hp, 258 lb-ft of torque, 6.4 seconds to 100 km/h, and 10.1/7.8/9.1 L/100 km (City/Hwy/Comb).
The Core suits buyers who want solid safety coverage, Google built-in, and full tech without options they won't use. The Plus is for those who want the 360° camera, elevated interior ambiance, and a panoramic roof as standard. The Ultra is the right call for anyone who wants Pilot Assist, Harman Kardon Premium Sound, and the air purifier all included — Pilot Assist is unavailable at Core and Plus, so Ultra is the entry point for that feature. The Black Edition Ultra delivers the same Ultra specification in a purpose-built dark exterior package.
All four trims share the same 247 hp B5 AWD mild hybrid powertrain and the same core safety architecture — the differences are in comfort, technology, and appearance.
Each XC40 trim tells a different story on the lot — the Core and Ultra sit closer together in daily use than the spec sheet suggests, and the Black Edition Ultra's finish is best understood in person. Come into Volvo Cars Oakville in Oakville and walk all four side by side with the team. Bring your questions about which features you'll actually use, and they'll help you land on the right one.
