The 2028 Volvo XC40 gets a fresh face, a bigger screen, and a safety system with new hardware behind it. For Ontario shoppers already eyeing a compact Volvo SUV, the refresh changes what you see, what you talk to, and what watches the road around you.
Here is what changed, what carried on, and what it means for how you would live with the car.
The most visible update is up front. The Thor’s Hammer Matrix LED headlights get a refined version of the signature light pattern. Around them sit an upgraded grille and a redesigned bumper, hood and front wings. The nose reads sharper and more contemporary while keeping the Scandinavian look Volvo is known for.
The rear follows with new LED rear lights, an upgraded tailgate and a redesigned rear bumper. Wheels come in new 18-inch, 19-inch and 20-inch diamond cut designs. The 20-inch size gives the XC40 its most dressed-up stance, and the smaller sizes keep a more understated look.
Inside, the headline is an 11.2-inch touchscreen. It is larger and crisper than before, and it needs fewer taps to reach key functions. That matters on a daily commute, when you want a setting changed without a menu hunt.
The screen also hosts Google Gemini, which is standard on the 2028 XC40 along with the Google Gemini AI Assistant. You can talk to the car in everyday language to plan a journey, find a stop along the way, or handle messages. Gemini can also translate a message before it is sent, answer questions from the car’s user manual, and pull up details about your destination.

The safety story is hardware first. The XC40 adds new front and corner radars, a new front camera, new rear corner radars, 12 new ultrasonic sensors and new parking cameras. Together they give the car a fuller picture of what is around it, and the car can respond in real time with automatic emergency steering or automatic emergency braking.
That platform is what makes three functions possible. Door Opening Alert is standard and warns occupants before a door swings into passing traffic. It protects cyclists and other road users, and it suits tight street parking.
Pilot Assist is an available feature, now with Lane Change Assist, and it follows the road more smoothly. It is aimed at longer highway runs, such as a weekend drive across Ontario. The available 360 Camera now shows a 3D view, which makes parking and low-speed manoeuvres easier to judge.
The XC40 keeps a traditional, integrated centre console rather than a floating design. It still offers practical storage bins and pass-throughs in that area, so the cabin remains a place to stow phones, bags and daily clutter.
The refresh also holds to the XC40’s role in the lineup. It remains a popular compact Volvo SUV, and the update is meant to keep it among the brand’s best sellers for years. The changes are about sharpening a proven shape, so the look is familiar even with new lights, bumpers and wheels.
The interior still offers aluminium decor, and it adds a Black Ash option. Refined cabin illumination rounds out the setting.
If you spend your week in traffic, the larger screen, Gemini and the standard wireless charger cut down on fiddling with your phone. The voice assistant understands everyday language, so you can ask for a stop or dictate a message instead of tapping through menus.
If you have a family or a busy schedule, Door Opening Alert is a standard safeguard that works in the background on every errand. Pilot Assist with Lane Change Assist and the 360 Camera with 3D View are available upgrades. Choose them if highway distance or tight parking figures in your routine.
If you care about style, the cabin has a new option. For the first time, XC40 customers can choose Arianne Cardamom leather upholstery paired with Brown Ash wood decor across the interior. It is a warmer, more premium look than the usual dark cabin.
A few points are worth knowing as you plan. Some features are optional and require customer opt-in, and availability of features and services can vary by market. Some connected apps also require setup, and compatibility varies.
The 2028 XC40 updates its lights, bumpers, wheels, screen and safety sensors while keeping the practical compact SUV shape that made it popular. Standard Gemini, wireless charging and Door Opening Alert lift the everyday experience, and the optional driver-support features add highway and parking help.
