The first real snowfall sorts out which vehicles are ready for the season. Slushy intersections, icy hills and unplowed side streets all ask the same question: can the vehicle put its power down without spinning its wheels?
For 2026, the Volvo XC60 answers that question the same way across the whole lineup. Every XC60 powertrain uses all-wheel drive (AWD), from the B5 mild hybrid to the T8 plug-in hybrid and the Polestar Engineered model. Here is what that means once the cold months arrive.
The 2026 XC60 comes with three powertrain choices, and none of them sends power to only two wheels. That keeps shopping simple. You choose the trim and the powertrain you like, and AWD comes with it.
All three use an 8-speed automatic transmission. The badge on the tailgate changes from one XC60 to the next, but the drive layout underneath stays the same.
All-wheel drive sends power to all four wheels instead of two. On a slippery surface, that spreads the work of getting moving across more tires. The result is steadier starts at a snowy stop sign and more confident climbs up an icy driveway or a parking garage ramp.
AWD is a traction tool for getting going and keeping your momentum. Stopping and steering still come down to the grip of your tires, so a good set of winter tires stays part of the plan. Every 2026 XC60 trim leaves the factory on all-season tires, which makes a winter set worth adding before the first big storm.
Snowbanks and rutted side streets reward a bit of extra height. The 2026 XC60 B5 AWD offers 209 mm (8.2 in) of ground clearance, while the T8 plug-in hybrid and Polestar Engineered models sit at 200 mm (7.9 in).
All three share a 21.2-degree approach angle and a 23.4-degree departure angle. Those numbers help the front and rear bumpers clear the ridge of packed snow a plow leaves at the end of the driveway. The B5 AWD is also rated to wade through water up to 400 mm deep at a maximum speed of 10 km/h, a handy figure when the snow starts to melt.
Both powertrains bring AWD, so the choice comes down to how you drive the rest of the year.
The B5 AWD mild hybrid is the simpler setup. It reaches 100 km/h from a stop in 6.9 seconds and is rated at 9.0 L/100 km combined. There is no plug to think about, which suits drivers who park outdoors or travel long distances often.
The T8 plug-in hybrid adds an 18.8 kWh (nominal) battery and up to 58 km of all-electric range. It reaches 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. Every XC60 plug-in hybrid trim includes an electric cabin heater, afterrun parking climate and a 7-metre portable charger that works with 120 V and 240 V outlets.
AWD takes care of traction, and the cabin takes care of comfort. Here is how the key cold-weather features line up across the 2026 XC60 trims:
Moving up to Ultra is the simplest way to get the heated steering wheel, heated rear seats and headlight cleaning as standard equipment. Core and Plus buyers can still add each one as an option, so nobody has to give up winter comfort to stay at a lower trim.
