The XC40 keeps surpassing its rivals. With gas and all-electric powertrains, top-rated safety, and plenty of luxury in a compact package, the XC40 is primed to upgrade your driving experience. Three gas and one electric model offer plenty of choices and price levels to fit your needs and budget.
Here, we compare it to a known competitor, the 2021 Audi Q3.
The 2021 Volvo XC40 has more power options
The XC40 features three exciting powertrains. They start with the T4 engine, which is 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 187 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. It is available in two models. The T5 is available in all three gas grades, and it upgrades to 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. We will introduce the final powertrain a little later.
The Q3 features two standard powertrains. The TFSI 40 engine is available in two models and consists of a turbocharged four-cylinder that outputs 184 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. Although the Volvo T4 engine has slightly more horsepower, it actually has the same combined fuel efficiency rating of 9.3 L/100 km. The next engine up in the Q3 is the TFSI 45 engine, which generates 228 horsepower, falling about 20 horsepower short of its competitor with the XC40's T5 engine.
What really puts the XC40 over the top is the Recharge model. Featuring an all-electric powertrain, it generates 402 horsepower and 486 lb-ft of torque, which is the best power of any vehicle in this comparison. It features a long range of up to 335 km and produces a 0%-80% charge in just 40 minutes with 150kW DC fast charging.
The XC40 has more (and better) powertrain options than its competitor.
The 2021 XC40 has a better safety rating
If you want to drive a compact SUV, it is important to understand its safety rating. Volvo has been at the forefront of safety for generations, and it does not change with the XC40. IIHS awards the XC40 with one of its best designations: 2021 Top Safety Pick +.
You can trust the XC40 to offer some of the best safety available. But these safety features are encompassed in a unique, Scandinavian-styled setting that you won’t experience with the Q3.
