What Volvo Just Announced for the 2028 XC60 and XC90

School runs, commutes and weekend errands fill most Ontario weeks, and most of those trips are short. Volvo’s 2028 XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrids are aimed squarely at that kind of driving.

On September 15, 2026, Volvo launched the first long-range plug-in hybrid variants of both SUVs. The XC60 also gets a full design update. Here is what is confirmed so far, and how to think about which one suits your household.

What Volvo Has Confirmed for the 2028 XC60 and XC90

These are Volvo’s first ever long-range plug-in hybrids for the XC60 and XC90. The electric range is now more than two and a half times that of the existing plug-in hybrid variants. A new, larger-capacity, floor-integrated battery and a more powerful electric motor make that possible, and the petrol engine can take over when needed.

Both SUVs also remain available as mild hybrids. Volvo describes the plug-in models as a bridge to full electrification, alongside the all-electric EX60.

The XC60: A Redesigned Mid-Size SUV

The XC60 is the model with the most visible changes. Up front, it gets an upgraded grille and a redesigned bumper, hood and front wings, plus new wheels. The Thor’s Hammer Matrix LED headlights have a refined light signature. At the back, the tailgate, rear LED lamps and rear bumper lean harder on horizontal lines for a wider, more planted stance.

The cabin is new too. A redesigned dashboard and door panels sit alongside wood decor and Cardamom ventilated Nappa leather, with top-of-the-line interior illumination setting the mood after dark.

On the dash, an 11.2-inch screen runs Volvo Car UX, the company’s latest infotainment system. Like the new XC90, the XC60 will receive regular over-the-air updates, so the car keeps improving after delivery.

Safety gets the biggest upgrade. These three features are standard on the XC60:

  • Automatic emergency steering, which can steer around danger
  • Automatic emergency braking, which brakes instantly when a collision is detected
  • An alert to occupants when a cyclist is approaching before a door is opened

An upgraded sensing set of radars, cameras and other sensors supports the driver-assistance features. Lane change assist and a 360 camera with 3D view are part of that package, which helps in tight parking lots and busy multi-lane commutes.

The XC90: Seven Seats and a Large-SUV Footprint

The XC90 plug-in hybrid seats seven, which is the clearest reason to look at it. Its electric range of up to 117 km is slightly shorter than the XC60’s, a fair trade for a larger body with a third row.

For audio, the Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system is optional on the XC90. Order books for the XC60 and XC90, including the Black Edition, opened with the announcement.

Which Plug-In Hybrid Fits Your Household

If your week is mostly commuting and school runs for a smaller family, the XC60 is the right fit. It offers the longest electric range in the pair, the new exterior and cabin design, and a standard safety suite that includes automatic emergency steering.

If you regularly carry up to seven people, the XC90 is the right fit. You still get up to 117 km of electric driving for daily trips, with the petrol engine ready for longer weekend runs.

Plug-in hybrids also suit buyers who want electric driving without committing to a fully electric vehicle. You can plug in for daily trips and let the petrol engine handle the rest. If you would rather skip the plug, the mild-hybrid versions of both SUVs remain on offer.

Production Timing and Ordering

Order books for the new XC60 and XC90 opened on September 15, 2026 in selected markets, and production starts later this autumn. Ontario shoppers who want to be ready can use the gap to think through three things: daily driving distance, how many seats the household needs, and whether charging at home is practical.

Choosing Between the 2028 XC60 and XC90 Plug-In Hybrids

The 2028 Volvo XC60 plug-in hybrid pairs up to 126 km of electric range with a redesigned exterior, a new cabin, an 11.2-inch Volvo Car UX screen and standard automatic emergency steering. The XC90 offers up to 117 km of electric range and seven seats for larger families.
