Volvo gives buyers two clear paths to an electrified SUV, and the choice between them shapes how you fuel up, how far you drive between stops, and how you plan a road trip. The 2026 Volvo XC60 Plug-In Hybrid keeps a gas engine in the mix for flexibility, while the coming Volvo EX60 goes fully electric with long range and fast charging.
Both wear the Volvo badge, both seat five, and both carry the brand’s safety technology. The difference is the powertrain philosophy behind each one. This comparison lays out the numbers and the day-to-day trade-offs so you can decide which suits your routine.

The XC60 Plug-In Hybrid runs its first 58 km on electricity, then switches to a turbocharged gas engine for everything beyond that. On a combined basis it produces 455 hp and 523 lb-ft of torque and reaches 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. Because it carries a fuel tank, a long drive means a two-minute fill-up rather than a charging stop, which suits drivers who cover big distances or who cannot yet charge at home.
The EX60 takes the fully electric route. Canadian buyers will choose between the P10 AWD, rated up to 514 km of range, and the P12 AWD, rated up to 640 km. It also charges quickly: on a 400 kW fast charger, the EX60 can add up to 270 km of range in about ten minutes. For a driver with home or workplace charging, that combination can cover most trips without a gas station in the picture.
Both SUVs are rated to tow, and the EX60 leads here with a braked capacity of up to 5,291 lbs (2,400 kg), compared with 3,483 lbs (1,580 kg) for the XC60 Plug-In Hybrid. Either figure covers a small trailer or a pair of personal watercraft. The XC60 Plug-In Hybrid answers with cargo space of up to 1,528 litres behind folded rear seats and the reassurance of a fuel tank when you are far from a charger.
The XC60 Plug-In Hybrid pairs Volvo’s established infotainment with Google built-in and offers Harman Kardon Premium Sound on upper trims. The EX60 moves the cabin forward, with a 28-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system, headrest speakers in all four main seats, and Google’s Gemini assistant for natural voice interaction. It also introduces Volvo’s multi-adaptive safety belt in the front row.
The decision comes down to charging access and driving patterns. If you regularly drive long distances, cannot charge at home yet, or want the simplicity of a fuel tank as backup, the XC60 Plug-In Hybrid lets you drive electric around town and gas everywhere else. If you can charge at home or work and want the lowest running costs with the longest electric range, the EX60 is built for that life, with range and charging speed that handle most trips on electrons alone.
Timing matters too. The 2026 XC60 Plug-In Hybrid is part of Volvo’s current model-year lineup, while the EX60 will reach Canadian customers with deliveries beginning by fall 2026. A shopper who needs a vehicle sooner leans toward the XC60 Plug-In Hybrid; a shopper who can wait for a fully electric SUV has the EX60 on the horizon.
