July in Ontario can turn a parked car into a greenhouse in under an hour. Cracking a window helps a little, but it doesn’t do much when the interior is already baking by the time you get back to it.
The 2026 Volvo EX40 tackles that problem with four separate climate systems, each doing a different job before, during, and after your drive. Here’s what each one actually does.
The EX40’s electric cabin heater and cooler is standard on every trim, from Core through Black Edition Ultra. It runs on power drawn from the vehicle’s 79 kWh usable battery rather than an idling engine.
Paired with the Volvo Cars app, also standard across the lineup, that setup means the climate system can start working before you’ve even walked out the door, no engine warm-up required.
Air quality tools differ by trim on the EX40. Core includes an air quality system that monitors what’s circulating through the cabin.
Plus, Ultra, and Black Edition Ultra swap that for an air purifier and remote cabin pre-cleaning feature, giving those three trims a way to work on cabin air before you climb in. Either version puts air quality on the dashboard instead of leaving it to guesswork, which matters on the muggier days an Ontario summer tends to produce.
The two-zone climate system, standard across every EX40 trim, lets the front-left and front-right seats run at different temperatures at the same time.
A humidity sensor, also standard lineup-wide, feeds that system information about moisture in the air, not just the thermometer reading. On a humid afternoon, that’s the difference between air that reads cool on a display and air that actually feels dry.
Afterrun parking climate keeps managing the cabin after you’ve shut the door and walked away, and it’s standard on Core, Plus, Ultra, and Black Edition Ultra alike.
Higher trims add a heat pump as standard equipment, while Core carries it as an available option, which helps manage that extra energy draw more efficiently. Both features pull from the same battery that drives the motors, so cabin comfort keeps running independent of whether the wheels are turning.
Here’s how the EX40’s climate equipment breaks down across the four 2026 trims:
